Everyone strives in vain.

Gatsby, along with most of the other central characters, moved East in pursuit of an elusive dream. But the dream, of which he himself only had a vague idea, could never be realized because of one simple fact. It doesn't exist. Shiny pieces of Americana seem to be accessible to those who seek it with passion. But the truth is that the gold is gilded. The old aristocracy will never accept newcomers. It is equally futile for the new to transmute themselves into gold as lead will always be lead, no matter the thickness of gold plating. Neither can dreamers turn back the clock to more auspicious times. What Gatsby was chasing was an impossibility. He wanted the crown and the queen of the aristocracy. But to the old rich, he was permanently a mere James Gatz.
Our group illustrated this theme and tied all our various projects together using the idea of one of Gatsby's famous parties.
